I actually recommend picking up Rosetta Stone, it's not bad and eventually you pick up more than you think.
For conversational Japanese Pimsleur is really good, not so much reading it because remember it's audio. Although I've heard Rocket Japanese is good as well. However Japanese is just one of the harder languages to learn to read all in all. I suggested Rosetta Stone because it gets you off the ground when you want to catch the general gist while knowing it inside in out. It's kind of like how poor Spanish speakers can be completely illiterate in their own language but can still speak it when dealing with Pimpsleur.
