I'm on a serious Sabaton and Powerwolf kick right now. My favorite song by Sabaton is "The Price of a Mile" (Much of their music is about historic conflicts, that one is about WW1) As for Powerwolf, either "In The Name of God (Deus Vult)" or "Army of the Night" (most of their music has heavy religious theming and / or gothic theming) As for other "modern" metal and hard rock, Shinedown still does some really solid Hard Rock. "Asking For It" and "State of my Head" are pretty good from their latest album. Sixx A.M. is one not as many people know about (unless they're prior fans of Motley Crue), my favorite song of theirs is "Life is Beautiful." Lots of metal fans don't like Five Finger Death Punch much, but much of their music (especially the old stuff) is pretty good imho. Falconer is pretty good, Stratovarius, Freedom Call, Iron Savior... Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Volbeat... Blind Guardian, In This Moment... Avantasia is technically Rock Opera I think, but some of their music has a metal feel to it. If you're not opposed to a band that's blatantly Christian and tries to avoid cursing and satanic themes, Thousand Foot Krutch is a decent Hard Rock band. Underoath is pretty good too (also Christian), a lot of their music is hard rock or heavy metal in feel. EDIT: Because I added Avantasia to the list I'm going to give an honorary mention to Kamelot, who is very blatantly Rock Opera but also very good. Most of the metal I like is power metal and much of it is Finnish / Swedish / German in origin. I do have more "modern" metal bands that I like, but the metal and hard rock bands I've listed here are my personal favorites. If you want any recommendations for exact songs based on either theming or a different song that you like, feel free to ask -- most of what I listen to is metal and hard rock so I can probably recommend a new band or song for ya
